The Sms Saga!

Beep beep. One message received. “Good morning”.
Options-Reply-Empty screen –“Hi da, good morning”.

This is one usual routine that takes place in my home or probably many other homes as well. This little article is to make people obsessed with mobile phones realize how silly they can be!

Characters:

Sujatha – The girl obsessed with mobile phones and smses!
Sandhya- The little sister who is irritated with her sister’s obsession!
Mother- Who is tired of advising her daughter!
Mobile phone – The irresistible culprit!

SCENE -1
Time – 10.30 pm
Location- Home sweet home

Beep…beep…..
Sandy- Switch that stupid cell phone off and let me sleep.
Suja- It’s my friend di, you don’t bother, just sleep.
Sandy- Whatever!

Beep… beep…
This time it’s my mother.
Mother – Suja, andha phonea off pannittu padukkara vazhiyai paaru…
Suja- nee thoongu maa….naan edho pannikuraen….

This continues for a while and after a few minutes all of them are in deep sleep.

SCENE -2
Time -6 am

Beep…beep
Mother- I never need an alarm to get up!
Suja- (keeps quiet and messages back)
This messaging continues even amidst my mom’s scolding and the time to get ready to go to college.

My sister is so busy smsing most of the time that she hardly knows whats happening at home or in her surroundings. Most of the time she doesn’t even reply to what I say…..seriously!

SCENE -3
Time- 5 pm (just after she returns from college)

Sandy- “So, how was college today?”
Suja- (no reply)…??
Sandy- “I asked how was college today?”
Suja- After a pause and a surprising look at my face, “I need to watch that movie CD which
my friend gave me.”

Thanks a lot…that’s what I wanted! I wonder what these cell phones have that we don’t have. Smsing has become one of the most popular things among college goers these days. Who would have thought that my sister, who once upon a time was an introvert would land up making so many friends that she doesn’t have
time for her own family…zamana badal gaya hai! (Times have changed).

Whenever the two of us go out together, I make an attempt to talk to her about school and other gossips, but that never happens, this little thing called “nokia 6610” always comes in the path. I wonder how such a small thing can do so much!

My dad recently read an article on the internet as to how a little girl who kept smsing got her fingers
so swollen that she couldn’t move her hands for three months. My dad, fearing that that might happen to his daughter told her about it. But neither articles nor advices worked, for it’s the same old story even now!

When I asked one of my sister’s juniors why he used sms other than a direct conversation, I was stunned by his answer –“We must make best use of technology”!
(gulp) times have surely changed!

If this is the case now, what will it be like when I enter college? Will I join this groove? Whatever!!

As for now, I’m planning how to prepare myself technically, physically and mentally to protect my sister from this little culprit! ;-)

Signs of improvement!!! I mean not in Suja's 'sms'ing but in your style of writing. Poking fun and displaying a sense of humour always go well with the readers. Never stop!!! Go ahead.

Hi,

This is Praveen. Don't worry about who this is... I just wanted to post as I got to read your article.

I understand what your sis is undergoing. She has convincing reasons as to why she is so obsessed, but I bet, she cannot reveal it. Thats her position now. Reasons might be, ITS ABSOLUTELY UNNECESSARY!

Well I was stuck to the phone too! It all happened a year ago. I would keep talking to someone and keep relpying to someone else even without looking at the phone. But I can't hide that it revealed a lovely relationship for my lifetime. I'm one of those who is so thanful to the 'SMSing technology', but for which I would have lost the MOST of my life.

I should also tell you that SMSes can be so cranky. You never know what the hell is happening on the other end and people can fool you so much. And when it comes to sensitive issues like love and similar relationships, I would rather say the mobile can be your worst part. Please for God's sake understand that a mobile cannot reveal your tone of voice, your feelings and your true identity. In issues like this, I would always suggest a phone call would be better and can save you from communication gaps.

Well thats all from me... I thought I wouldn't get another opportunity to express something that was in my mind for so long. And that made me message.

Thank you Sandhya!

Sure ur sis is hooked on to the sms bug!SMS's are an awesome way to bridge people together and if it acted as a catalyst to bring out the otherwise "introvert" person ur sister was once upon a time...i guess u have little to complain..!!
I admit, SMS's have a substantial element of irony to them- as u so cleverly highlighted the rather "undefinable" distance it has created within ur family....but i guess it's here to stay..and trust me, by next year or so, u'll b writing a blog entry abt how u got smitten by the bug..!!!
Breathe easy pal!

hi everyone...

i am glad that i got most of the comments on the site rather than by SMS!!! Its so surprising to notice that most of the comments that ihave received are from ppl whom i have never spoken to or seen...isnt that gr8? well....im makin new friends too... sulaiman bhaiyya was very sweet indeed to give a comment, he is the first one to always read my articles..:-) Thanks to kashy that he finally posted a comment, he would otherwise jus check it out and tell me the comment on the PHONE! Karthik(anna!)....i havent been able to figure out if he is in favour or against this whole sms saga, but he sure did put forward his general view.Arun(anna) also seems in favour... u know a lot abt me??? sounds interesting! Looks like praveen(anna! - if i may add that!) got a little too emtional after reading the article, he actually went to the importance of the telephone! anyways...i am happy that i could provide him a platform for expressing his views...hey, ASH(!!??) , thanks for ur comment....dont u seriously think that u shud get into writing as well? I guess most of u who have commented should....Thanks for ur comments once again! Keep visiting!! :-)

this is shalini. ur blog was really very good. it was good to read some interesting and known facts of my friend from her own sis.
as u have said ur sis is always found sms-ing, there is no doubt in that.but she has got so many lovely friends only thru this. probably in a course of time she will get bored with this and become normal at home. how many days can she afterall be without caring for such a nice sis like u?

thank u for expressing the fact that i am always on tenderhooks . it actually helps since u can fall any direction easily it offers u that kind of flexiblity. And forget this anna thing for once cos u r most obviously my sis.Is that Aishwarya Mani's sis???Whoever it may be,her style of writing is also pretty good and u might as well rope her into ur profession.Nice job done and pls improve ur vocabs so that the next blog will be more elegant rather than coloqial.

its me signing off

Hahaha...thank u Sandhya and Karthick, for ur panegyric comments-i however firmly believe, that i do not share the same kinetic zeal that drives Sandhya to write such well-crafted entries. Having studied them, i realise her approach is uniquely personified by the distinct protean styles she implements..
And yes Sandhya, i do write,..its my "food for thought" too!....but my thoughts flow much better from pen to paper, than from keyboard to screen....
in my case, the "pen is mightier" all the way...
Keep it going...
